MINISTRY OF INFRASTRUCTURE IS LAUNCHING A NATIONWIDE GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Municipal Development Fund (MDF) of the Ministry of Infrastructure is launching a nationwide green infrastructure development program. Within that project, MDF has already purchased 15 500 seedlings of evergreen and broad-leaved deciduous trees, which will be gradually planted across all regions of Georgia.

The “Green Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future” Program is based on the principle of modern infrastructure development, per which infrastructure is not limited to the construction of new facilities. Under this modern approach, roads, schools, kindergartens, and sports or recreational spaces achieve their full value when they blend harmoniously into the surrounding environment and provide people with a healthy, safe, and environmentally sustainable setting.

That is precisely why the development of green landscapes, environmental stewardship, and the greening of public spaces are an integral part of infrastructural projects.
The program aims at improving public urban and recreational areas, strengthen the ecological balance, and create a modern, people-oriented environment.

Planting will be carried out in full compliance with agricultural standards and will include landscaping the courtyards of recently rehabilitated schools and kindergartens and the ones being under construction, landscaping median strips and traffic islands, restoring degraded green spaces, and creating new green areas in various municipalities.

The selection of trees and plants takes into account the natural conditions and regional features of Georgia. Seedlings are selected based on local climate conditions and many years of experience, ensuring their high viability and long-term growth.
16 species of evergreen and deciduous plants will be used for planting, including: Arizona cypress, Leyland cypress, Himalayan cedar, magnolia, cedar, linden, maple, and other species of high ornamental and ecological value.

The program was launched by the Ministry of Infrastructure in Rustavi City, where 250 trees and plants, including Arizona cypresses and eastern cedars – were symbolically planted on the median strip at the entrance to the city and in the surrounding area. The planting ceremony was attended by Minister of Infrastructure Revaz Sokhadze, Executive Director of MDF Giorgi Shonia, Rustavi Mayer Nino Latsabidze, and representatives from the Ministry, MDF, and the Municipality.

Within that program, 240 trees and plants (Eastern Cedar and Himalayan Cedar) have already been planted on one of the median strips at the entrance to Rustavi City, as well as on the grounds of Kindergarten №31 in Rustavi, which was recently rehabilitated by MDF and is designed to accommodate 450 children, where 500 deciduous and coniferous trees and plants were planted.
Under the Green Infrastructure Development Program, there are to be planted the evergreen trees and plants to create a windbreak along a specific section of Rustavi Highway, as well as to landscape urban and public spaces in various regions of the country.
