Cement-Concrete Pavement Arrangement Works have Commenced on Tbilisi-Rustavi Highway

Cement-concrete pavement arrangement works have been initiated on Tbilisi-Rustavi highway. As a result of active operations, pavement laying works have commenced ahead of schedule.   Today, the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia - Mr. Davit Shavliashvili accompanied by his First Deputy and Executive Director of the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia – Mr. Giorgi Amashukeli, were visiting works ongoing on Tbilisi-Rustavi highway. The authorities entered into conversation with people employed at the project site and obtained detailed information on the progress of works.

After project completion, trip from Tbilisi to Rustavi will take 15 minutes and conveyance will become the most safe and convenient. The project is implemented by the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia under the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.

Civil works for the first and third sections of Tbilisi-Rustavi highway were launched on April 22 of current year.  Contract duration period is 17 months.  At the first stage, the first and third sections will be subjected to rehabilitation, cost of works amounts to GEL 88 761 128,95. There are some 250 persons employed at the construction site, there are locals among them as well.

The Tbilisi-Rustavi road construction project is funded by the ADB and the Government of Georgia and provides for modernization of the  Tbilisi-Rustavi section of “Tbilisi-Red Bridge” (Azerbaijan border) motor road of international importance.   

Estimated length of the design road is 17.4 kilometers. Considering complexity of the road alignment, the design road and respective design activities are divided into three following different sequences: First sectionfrom the intercity bus terminal to the restaurant Marabda – 4km long.  Cross section of the road is a 6 lane one, with the 3.50m width for each lane. The central barrier is 6m wide. 2.5-3.0m width sidewalks for pedestrians will be arranged on both sides. Pavement is of asphalt concrete. The new road infrastructure includes one interchange, one traffic centre and two bridges;

Second sectiondensely populated Ponichala areawith estimated length of 6.8 kilometers. At this section, construction of  completely new, approximately 2km long urban type detour road is planned along the river Mtkvari.  Cross section of the road is a 4 lane one, with the 3.75m width for each lane. Pavement is of asphalt concrete. The new road infrastructure of this section includes: traffic centers, two underground passages, four  highway bridges and four pedestrian bridges; 

Third section – from the “Socar” fuel station located at the Ponichala Settlement exit to the Rutsavi Motor Vehicle Fair - 6,6 kilometer long.  Cross section of the road is a 4 lane one, with the 3.75m width for each lane. The central barrier is 6m wide. Sidewalks are not envisaged.  Pavement is of cement-concrete. The new road infrastructure of this section includes: one interchange, one traffic center and two bridges.

As for the second section, its detailed design is completed and submitted to the ADB. Tender for this section will be announced in 2015
