July 8, 2014

22 Buildings in Batumi, Tamar Settlement are under rehabilitation works. Ilia Darchiashvli, first deputy executive director of the Municipal Development Fund visited the construction works underway in the settlement of IDPs and talked with the local population. MDF financed by the Government of Georgia carries out external hydro- and heat-insulation works and water-insulation and construction works of foundations for 22 residential buildings intended for the Batumi IDPs.

The Government of Georgia at the request of the MDF allocated funds for the rehabilitation works to 22 buildings. Unless the abovementioned works, the residents of these houses would be at risk. The walls of low quality buildings were constantly wet, foundations were inundated, water and fecal masses flew into the basement of the buildings and reptiles appeared. The situation created unbearable living conditions for residents. The inundated foundation created a danger of destruction. However, the mentioned threats have been eliminated as a result of effective cooperation of the Government and the MDF.

22 new buildings for Batumi IDPs were built during the previous management of the MDF – in 2010. Within a year and a half after the completion of construction, the problems arose with respect the stability of the buildings due to poor construction quality that led to the unbearable living conditions for residents. Through the efforts of the current management of the MDF, the problems have already been successfully resolved.

The government allocated more than GEL 1,300,000 for additional works; In particular, total cost of external hydro- and heat-insulation works is GEL947 377,00. The works commenced in November 2013 and completed this June. Total cost of additional water-insulation / construction works of foundations totals GEL356  653,03. The works started this March and will complete by the end of July.

Upon completion of the project, all problems the IDPs are facing will be completely solved and the threat will be eliminated. In addition, 60 persons were employed during the construction works under the project. Georgian company Java Ltd is conducting the construction works.
