The Prime Minister Visited Tbilisi-Rustavi Highway Construction Works

After construction of the new highway, a trip from Tbilisi to Rustavi will take 15 minutes. Today, the prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Gharibashvili was visiting the construction site.    The Head of Government got updated on the project with assistance of the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Mr. Elguja Khokrishvili and Deputy Executive Director of the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia, Mr. Tornike Toradze.    The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Governor of Kvemo Kartli Giorgi Mghebrishvili and Majority Deputy from Rustavi, Zviad Dzidziguri.    

The Prime Minister of Georgia became familiar with construction works and entered into conversation with the local population employed at the construction site.  According to Irakli Gharibashvili, the new road will release permanent traffic congestions, mitigate the incidence of traffic accidents and generate employment opportunities for local inhabitants.  

Construction of the Tbilisi-Rustavi highway is under implementation by the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia. The civil works contract for the first and third sections of the highway is made between the  Municipal Development Fund of Georgia and the winner company “Sinohydro Corporation Limited”.  

Work implementation commenced on April 22, contract duration is 17 months. At the first stage, first and third sections will be subjected to rehabilitation.   In course of works, the road will not be blocked at the first section, and only one direction will be blocked at the third section.   

Cost of the first and third sections is GEL 88 761 128,95. It is notable that the local population will be employed at the construction site.  

As for the second section, its detailed design is finalized and it is submitted to the ADB. The bidding for the mentioned section will be announced separately.

The Tbilisi-Rustavi highway construction project is funded by the ADB and Government of Georgia and provides for modernization of the Tbilisi-Rustavi section of the international significance “Tbilisi-Red Bridge” (Azerbaijan border) motor road.   

Tentative length of design highway is 17,4 km. Based on complexity of the ROW,  the designed ROW and project activities are divided into three sections, in particular: 

First section- From inter-town station to restaurant “Marabda” with length of 4 km. Cross section of the road consists of  6 lane, each of 3,5 m width,  width of the  center  line is 6 m. Sidewalks with the width of 2,5-3,0 m will be arranged on both side of the road. Road pavement is of asphalt concrete, one traffic  center, two bridges and one overpass will be constructed on  mentioned section.    

Second section- Densely populated territory of Ponichala- tentative length 6,8 km.  Construction of 2 km long new urban type road is planned on this section across river Mtkvari. Cross section of the road consists of 4 lanes, each lane with the width of 3,75 m. Road pavement is of asphalt concrete. Traffic centers, two undergrounds, four bridges and four pedestrian bridges will be constructed on mentioned section.  

Third section-  From “Socar” gas station located  at the exit of Ponichala  to Rustavi automobile market - with length of 6,6 km. Cross section of the road consists of 4 lanes each with width of 3,75m, width of the center line is 6 m. Sidewalks are not foreseen. Road pavement is of asphalt concrete, one overpass, one traffic center and two bridges will be constructed on the mentioned territory.
