Large Scale Shore Protection Works Launched in Anaklia

Mr. Davit Narmania, Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia and Mr. Irakli Garibashvili, the Prime Minister visited Anaklia, where the large scale shore protection works are ongoing. These activities financed by Asian Development Bank in Georgia are implemented by the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia.

The project will be implemented in two stages and 4100 meter section will be covered in all. The project envisages arrangement of 10 breakwater structures with concrete tetra pods, which will be placed at 250-300 meter distance from the beach along a 4 km long section and protect the shoreline.

Apart from the coast protection works, the project also provides for the improvement of the coastline and arrangement of the sand beach. In whole, arrangement of about three km long and 60 meter wide shoreline is planned.

Cost of the first stage works amounts to GEL 15,355,551.74, duration of construction works – 9-10 months. In the course of the whole period of construction works, the contractor company will employ about 100 persons, 80% of which will be locals.

Under the first stage, the following works will be implemented: coast-protecting works and shoreline protection from the River Enguri estuary to the river Tikori estuary, section with the total length of 2600 meters. The project envisages arrangement of 6 breakwater structures with concrete tetra pods, which will be placed at 200-250 meter distance from the beach.  Total length of the structure – 2160m, out of it, total length of 6 breakwater structures – 1700m, distance between the breakwater structures amounts to 460 m in tote. The works include coast-protection of the 300m long section of the shore adjacent to the quay located at the river Enguri estuary, with quarry stone.  Moreover, the project also provides for the improvement of the coastline and arrangement of about 2300 m long and 60 meter wide sand beach.

As regards the second stage works, they involve coast-protecting works and shoreline protection from the river Tikori estuary southward (Poti City direction), section with the total length of 1500 meters. The works include arrangement of 4 underwater breakwater structures with concrete tetra pods, which will be placed at 200-250 meter distance from the beach.  Total length of the structure – 1470 m, out of it, total length of 4 breakwater structures – 1200m, distance between the breakwater structures amounts to 270 m in tote. Apart from the coast-protecting works, the second stage works also include arrangement of about 1500 m long and 60 meter wide sand beach.

 Estimated cost of the second stage works amounts to GEL 10-15 million.  Expected duration of works – 7-8 months.

The tetra pods have already been placed at the shoreline and the laying into the sea will start when the weather conditions are improved.

Project is implemented by Modern Business Group which will complete the first stage works by July 2014. As a result of this project, local residents will be protected from inundation of their household plots and agricultural lands. In additions, conditions for tourists will be improved.
