The new infrastructural project launching in Katskhi

The Municipal Development Fund (MDF) starts the new infrastructural project in Katskhi. There has been scheduled construction of the cells and a Service Center by Katskhi Column to date. Within the project, the accommodation of priests undergo reconstruction, whilst the tourist space and yard are being improved as well. The potable water reservoir is also envisaged to be arranged  and appropriate network to be improved there under the project that will enable the monks as well as up to twenty households of so called Kharatishvili Settlement to be provided with water supply.

The rehabilitation works will contribute to development of tourist infrastructure and employment of local residents. From the end of the year already, locals and tourists will be able to use the infrastructure of modern standards to be completely adapted for the people with disabilities.

Katskhi Column represents an ancient and a unique monument. The historians presume that the cross of Bolnisi type that is carved at the bottom of the column is considered to be dated of not later than VI century. It is of 40 meters height. Along with Georgian experts, many foreign explorers, travelers and publications have been interested in Katskhi Column.

The restoration-preservation works at Katskhi Monastery and one stage for provision of cultural heritage zones with amenities have already been finalized with financial support from the World Bank.  The dome of the Monastery was reinforced and the small windows (apertures) and a fencing were restored. The site was improved along with the parking lot and WCs. Fences and gates of private persons, fencing of the cemetery and monastery access road were rehabilitated, outdoor lighting system was also arranged there.

The Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia Ms. Maia Tskitishvili, Deputy Minister Mr. Grigol Katsia and representatives of local authorities have visited the site.
