Rehabilitation of cableways undergoing in Chiatura

May 22, 2018

Restoration of the cableway systems and stations in Chiatura keeps on proceeding. The cable transport has been one of the basic means of movement over mountainous relief of chiatura since the 50-ies of the 20th century.

The first passenger cableway in former Soviet Unit was built exactly in Chiatura. For three (3) tens of years the lines and the rail gondolas had not been meeting the modern requirements, representing some threat to passengers. Therefore, operation of the passenger cableway was stopped in 2016.

Last year the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia (MRDI) commenced reconstruction of the cableways and stations with financial support from the Government of France. As per the project there is to be restored the central station wholly along with four directions, coming out of it. The total length of the road makes up 3428 meters.

The French Company “Pomagalski” has provided supply of the reverse type cableway with the rail gondolas. Total cost of the project amounts to GEL 40 million.

The Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia Ms. Maia Tskitishvili, Deputy Minister Mr. Grigol Katsia, Executive Director of the Municipal Development Fund (MDF) Mr. Gagi Buadze and representatives of local authorities have conducted the site visit for construction works, being carried out in Chiatura.

Upon the project finalization, the local residents as well as the guests of Chiatura will be able to use ecologically clean new passenger cable transport.
