Tourist Infrastructure Arrangement Works Ongoing in Ikalto Monastery Adjacent Area

Under the Regional Development Project, the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure is implementing tourist infrastructure arrangement work project in Ikalto Monastery adjacent area.  The project is funded by the World Bank. Juansher Burchuladze, Executive Director of the MDF was visiting the project site.   

The following infrastructural facilities will be arranged in the vicinity of the cultural heritage monument under the project: information centers,  souvenir shops, toilets and monument access road with parking lot.  Concurrently, works are in progress in Dzveli and Akhali Shuamta Monasteries’ adjoining areas and total cost of works amounts to GEL 2 182 000. The Regional Development Project is aimed at contributing to preservation of cultural heritage monuments and development of tourist infrastructure in Georgia.  

As a result of project implementation, tourist infrastructure will become more efficient, which will create favourable conditions for tourism development in Kakheti Region.  Moreover, the project will improve social conditions for the locals and and increase number of tourists visiting Ikalto.   

There are 60 persons employed at the project site, majority of them are locals. The works commenced in 2015 and will be completed by the end of current year.
