Tourist Infrastructure Arrangement and Monastery Conservation Works Ongoing in Gelati Monastery

Arrangement of tourist infrastructure by Gelati Monastery and monastery conservation works are under implementation by order of the Municipal Development Fund of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.      The project is backed by the World Bank and Government of Georgia.  Today, the First Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Ilia Darchiashvili and Executive Director of the Municipal Development Fund, Juansher Burchuladze were visiting the project site.  The project aims at contributing to conservation of cultural heritage monuments and promotion of touristic infrastructure development in Georgia. Cost of works amounts to GEL 2,5 million.

By order of the Municipal Development Fund, tourist infrastructure will be arranged near Gelati Monastery. In particular, the project envisages construction of the following facilities:  information center, café, public toilets, souvenir shop, and a parking lot. At the same time, a 600 meter long monastery access road will be arranged and water supply and wastewater networks will be put in order as well.  Under restoration-conservation works’ project, Gelati monastery dome and walls will undergo restoration/conservation.   For the time being, restoration of the dome is completed, as for the walls – the named works will be resumed in spring, since they are not recommended in wintertime.

As a result of project implementation, a tourist infrastructure will be put in order, which will in general be conducive to enhancement of social-material status of the local population. Moreover, visitors of the region will be able to benefit from the efficient tourist infrastructure.
