Works on cable-braced bridge over Magana River are to commence

February 21, 2026

Minister of Infrastructure Revaz Sokhadze, together with the Executive Director of the Municipal Development Fund (MDF) Beka Urushadze, the Chairman of the Roads Department Levan Darakhvelidze, Member of the Parliament of Georgia Ilia Injia, representatives of local authorities, and Director of “Enguri Attraction” Nikoloz Antidze inspected the condition of the cable-braced bridge over Magana River in Jvari Town of Tsalenjikha Municipality.

The Ministry of Infrastructure is to begin the rehabilitation of the bridge, and turn it into a tourist attraction.
The historic 80-meter-long pedestrian bridge was built in 1931-1932, and is currently in a damaged condition. Until the 1960s - prior to construction of a new bridge by the builders of Enguri HPP, it was a very important section connecting Samegrelo with Zemo (Upper) Svaneti. After the construction of the new bridge, it retained only its pedestrian function.

On September 10, 2025, the bridge was granted a cultural heritage monument status. The bridge continues to be of interest to local and foreign tourists.
This bridge is the first cable-braced bridge in the former Soviet Union – a type of suspension bridge, pylons of which are connected to the bridge deck by steel cables –bracing wires.
