Tender for the new Metro Station Construction Works is Already Announced
The Municipal Development Fund of Georgia has already announced tender for construction of ‘University’ metro station. Today the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia Mr. Elguja Khokrishvili and Deputy Executive Director of the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia Mr. Ilia Darchiashvili have briefed public on the above-mentioned subject. The Minister and Deputy Executive Director of the Fund appealed to the companies to participate in the bidding. Khokrishvili and Darchiashvili also familiarized the public with visual materials depicting the metro station after completion of construction works.
“Various political parties have been using the metro ‘University’ construction project for their own political purposes, declaring that the project was suspended, which is not true. Actually the project is successfully ongoing, and as you are well aware the Municipal Development Fund has announced an international tender for civil works, therefore within a 2-year period Tbilisi will have a new, up-to-date metro station, which is of great importance for the city development and safe conveyance of passengers.” – stated the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia during his interview with journalists.
International tender was announced for construction of the new metro station, thus the interested companies will have an opportunity to submit their bids within a 2-month period following announcement. All decisions regarding bid evaluation and selection of the successful bidder will be agreed by the Fund with the Asian Development Bank, following which the winner company will be revealed for contract award. The winner company will have a 2-year period for project implementation.
Metro station construction project has been suspended for 20 years, it will start operating soon and benefit to the city development. Construction of the new metro station is funded by the Asian Development Bank.
Completion of extension works for the metro 2-nd line and opening of the University Station will improve and provide for the rapid and effective development of the urban transport system and release the congested road network.
The project envisages rehabilitation of tunnels with total length of 2.6 km. Construction works include: undergrounds and superstructures of the station, entrance halls on Vazha-Pshavela Avenue and Sandro Euli Street, crossings, dead end rails, connecting service gallery, ventilation shafts, electrification, signaling and communication, fire exits. Duration of construction works is 24 months, following which Tbilisi City population will be served by the new, up-to-date metro.
Extension works for the 2-nd metro line from the Delisi Station to the University Station started in 1985 and were suspended in 1993. Construction works were resumed in 1998 and the Vazha-Pshavela Station was opened in 2000, which started operation with a single track applying one of the tunnels existing between Delisi and Vazha-Pshavela Stations.
The tunnels between Vazha-Pshavela and University Stations are equipped with accesses shafts and ticket room, but the construction works are not yet completed.
As a result of construction works, the second tunnel between Delisi and Vazha-Pshavela metro stations will become operational, and a new 23-rd station will be added to the 22 stations existing in the city.
The metro station design was prepared by the Spanish Consulting Firm “Eurostudio”. The design underwent all mandatory expertise required by the Georgian legislation. Except for Georgian experts, the design was also evaluated by the independent Italian expert. Details of the design are approved by the Tbilisi Transport Company.
We would like to remind you that Tbilisi metro was opened in 1966 and currently it consists of 27km two double-track lines and 22 stations. In 2016, the city will have a new additional 23-rd metro station.
