Construction of the 23-rd Metro Station has commenced in Tbilisi

Today the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia –LEPL of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia has commenced construction of the“University“  metro station. Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Nodar Javakhishvili, Executive Director of the  Municipal Development Fund of Georgia, Juansher Burchuladze, Mayor of the City Davit Narmania and representatives of the Asian Development Bank  launched construction Works and briefed the public on the project.   A new metro station from Vazha-Pshavela Avenue to the metro station “University” will be constructed under the project.  Moreover, as a result of project implementation the second tunnel will  become operational between Delisi and Vazha-Pshavela metro stations. The project implementing agency is the Municipal Development Fund, and it is funded by the Asian Development Bank, total project cost amounts to GEL  83,000,670.45. Construction works will be completed in a 24-month period following their commencement. 

 

In the course of 20 years, construction of the 23-rd station of Tbilisi metro was conserved. Implementation of the named project will considerably contribute to urban transport system development in the capital of Georgia - Tbilisi.   Completion of the second line of Tbilisi metro will provide for rapid and safe conveyance of the citizens.  The new station will release the overground traffic congestion and solve transportation problems.  

 

Under the project, the existing tunnels with total length of 2,6km were subjected to rehabilitation. Construction works envisage arrangement of the superstructure and underground structures of the station, access shafts on Vazha-Pshavela avenue and Sandro Euli street, 4 accesses in all,  rail tracks, electric power sub-stations, escalators, ventilation and drainage systems, signalization and fire control systems, as well as emergency exits. 

 

Extension works for the 2-nd metro line from the Delisi Station to the University Station started in 1985 and were suspended in 1993. The construction works were resumed in 1998 and the Vazha-Pshavela Station was opened in 2000, which started operation with a single track applying one of the tunnels existing between the Delisi and Vazha-Pshavela Stations.

The tunnels between Vazha-Pshavela and University Stations are equipped with accesses shafts and ticket room, but the construction works are not yet completed. As a result of construction works, the second tunnel between Delisi and Vazha-Pshavela metro stations will become operational, and a new 23-rd station will be added to the 22 stations existing in the city. 

 

 

The event was also attended by the First Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Ilia Darchiashvili, Deputy Executive Directors of the Municipal Development Fund of Georgia – Tornike Toradze and Tariel Gugava,  as well as the management of  the Urban Transport Service and Metro.   The civil works contract was awarded to the winner Spanish-Italian JV „ASSIGNIA KOBRA “.

 

The metro station design was prepared by the Spanish Consulting Firm “Eurostudio”. The design underwent all mandatory expertise required by the Georgian legislation.   Except for Georgian experts, the design was also evaluated by the independent Italian expert. Details of the design are approved by the Tbilisi Transport Company. 

 

The Tbilisi metro was opened in 1966 and currently it consists of 27km two double-track lines and 22 stations. After project completion, the city will have a new additional up to standard 23-rd metro station.
